I am SO GLAD you want to learn about caring for leather jewelry purchases or potential purchases! I am here for you. But I need to tell you – this is just a general guide and applies to the leather types I sell. Following some of this advice on the wrong kind of leather could damage it! Leather and metal care should transition to all your leathers and metals, right? You need a guide that helps you identify the types of leather and how to care for them, as well as more metal care than I cover here! And you are in luck! For the price of a large fancy coffee, you can hold in your hand a guide that can do just that! I wrote it myself!

“Polish and Protect: A Sassy Guide to Leather & Jewelry Maintenance” is available on Amazon.com.

And while you wait for your book to arrive – Here are some general rules for caring for leathers and metals that should work with the products you’ve bought from me.

OVERVIEW OF GENERAL LEATHER CARE:

Enjoying quality leather goods starts with day-to-day care. When you buy quality leather, you have purchased something that should last you and can even last multiple generations if you care for it correctly. By following just a few simple rules, you can avoid unnecessary wear and tear and extend the life of your leather accessories (especially if you buy them from me)!

The best news is that these general rules of caring for leather jewelry can be applied to ALL of your leather and metal care. However, always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines over these rules. These instructions are a general guide for products designed by Jessica J Murray, Artist.

Remember that leather is skin, and it can stretch. Do not place something heavy on top of your fantastic leather earrings (for example) and pull them out – pulling at them will stretch or rip them.

Take extra care with leather items you use often but minimally. Many professionals recommend you take the time each week to wipe away dust and spots with a soft cloth or brush. (Both can be purchased from The General Store.) Scratches can detract from a flawlessly crafted piece or add more of an artsy flair to others. However, no one wants scratches the designer did not place as part of a piece. So be careful to avoid contact with heavily embellished clothes, sharp surfaces, or throwing your breathtaking earrings in with chunky jewelry or loose in a make-up bag.

Wet leather requires extra care, so take an umbrella if it rains! All the leather I ship out has been meticulously prepared, cleaned, and lotioned – however, none is 100% waterproof.

STORAGE:

You may ask yourself, “How should I store my new headline-worthy earrings?”

Storing your leather appropriately is part of caring for your leather jewelry. It is one of the easiest ways to prevent damage and maintain the look and value of your unforgettable jewelry.

Here are a few tips:

  • * Store leather away from direct sunlight, as this can cause fading.
  • * Store in a jewelry box or dust bag to avoid dust and scratches.
  • * Avoid using plastic bags; they prevent good ventilation. I do ship them in a plastic bag to avoid scratches and damage caused during shipping. Please take them out of the bag and let them breathe immediately! There is no such thing as CPR for legendary earrings.
  • * Store leather away from artificial heat sources because they can cause the leather to dry and crack! I am confident that NONE of the sensational earrings from my studio were designed with dry and cracked leather.

DO’S & DON’TS OF CARING FOR YOUR LEATHER JEWELRY:

Do:

  • * Regularly clean leather with a soft brush or cloth. (Both are sold in The General Store.)
  • * Regularly air out leather – the best way to do this is to wear those brilliant earrings!
  • * Clean spots and stains with gentle laundry soap (or specialized leather soap) and warm water as a last resort. Clean the whole product and the pair in case of color change or loss of dye and pigmentation.

Don’t:

  • * Machine wash leather or your new luxurious earrings.
  • * Immerse epic leather accessories in water to clean. These are not leather garments; there are metal finishes and possibly other embellishments.
  • * Get leather wet wherever possible, but when you do, blot dry, reshape, and lay out to dry away from artificial heat sources.
  • * Dry wet leather next to a radiator or with a hairdryer.
  • * Tumble dry leather.
  • * Iron leather. No, really, don’t barbeque your new, to die for, earrings!

You are very welcome!

Remember that quality leather patinas wear as they age, like skin, and will improve the show of the grain and any veins or scars. This process was considered during the design process, and the enhanced characteristics should improve the look of the earrings as they age.

7 WAYS TO PREVENT JEWELRY METALS FROM TARNISHING & RUSTING WHEN CARING FOR YOUR LEATHER JEWELRY:

1. Put Lotion On Before Your Jewelry – Lotion creates a barrier between skin & jewelry, preventing moisture from the skin from making contact with metal.

2. Avoid Bringing Jewelry Into The Bathroom – Moisture from showering, bathing, brushing teeth, and general washing can tarnish jewelry more quickly.

3. Remove Jewelry Before Swimming  – Chemicals like chlorine and elements like salt found in pools and oceans can aid the rusting process.

4. Store Jewelry In Closed Containers – This helps limit the amount of moisture & oxygen that makes contact with it.

5. Use Gel Packs – Insert gel packs into jewelry storage containers to absorb excess moisture. (Available for purchase in the store.)

6. Clean Jewelry – Wipe off metal parts with an alcohol wipe before and after each wear, and brush off or wipe down the leather part with a soft, dry brush or cloth. (Both are sold on this site.)

Enjoy caring for your favorite leather jewelry; hopefully, a pair of earrings I designed will be among your favorites.
